Highlights from the September, 2008 meeting

Daytona State's evolution to 4-year degrees discussed at Café 101

Located on the campus of Daytona State College, within the Mori Hosseini Center, Café 101 was the setting for FPRA’s September 9 monthly meeting. Dr. D. Kent Sharples, president of Daytona State College was the featured speaker. Dr. Sharples discussed the history of Daytona State College and the transitions and growth the college has experienced over the last several years.

Part of the experience was the fact that all attendees were treated to a fabulous lunch prepared and served by the Culinary Arts Dept. of DSC. Café 101 is a beautiful restaurant built to simulate real life experiences in restaurant management, food preparation and customer service.

Dr. Sharples, the 5th president of Daytona State College took us through the trials and tribulations of transitioning from a 2 year community college to DSC today, which recently began offering 4 year Baccalaureate Degree programs. Other highlights of Dr. Sharples’ presentation included discussion of the open access environment afforded by DSC, the vocational programs in nursing, firefighting, law enforcement and emergency medical technician training and the bachelor’s degree programs in applied sciences.

Dr. Sharples also informed the group of future developments including the acquisition of the News-Journal Center in Daytona Beach which will augment DSC’s College of Performing Arts, and the opening of a branch campus of the Florida State University Medical School. Both of these initiatives will serve to expand the campus, the number of students and services to the community.

The meeting was attended by approximately 60 people, including members, students, DSC staff and hopefully, future members.
