Late Sgt. Al Tolley honored as FPRA's 8th Annual Great Communicator
A police officer
since 1979, Tolley began his work in public information as an officer
assigned to the community relations division of the Daytona Beach
Police Department in 1989. He was named the department's public
information officer (PIO) in 1992. Five years later, he was promoted
to sergeant and returned to the patrol division, but later returned to
the PIO position. He died last summer after a short battle with
cancer.
"Al was a man of
honesty and integrity who plied the craft of public information in a
straightforward and to-the-point manner. He combined his savvy as a
skilled police officer with a quick wit and unbridled sense of humor,"
Volusia County Community Information Director Dave Byron, APR, wrote
in the nomination for the award.
"Respected by his
co-workers, city officials, fellow public information officers and
members of the media alike, Al Tolley served his profession and his
community well and is fondly remembered by all who knew him," added PR
consultant Kate Holcomb, APR, in the nomination.
The Great
Communicator Award is presented annually to a public relations
professional who has demonstrated strong communications skills and
service to the community. FPRA is a professional organization
dedicated to developing public relations practitioners who utilize
ethical practices to enhance the public relations profession. Some of
the proceeds from this event will be used to make a charitable
donation in Sgt. Al Tolley's name.
