When you are done reviewing these materials, hopefully you will be on track for an exciting, high-profile career in public relations or communications.

Overview:

Public relations is a competitive field. While the number of people claiming to be public relations specialists currently exceeds the positions available, the market is due to change. According to the Department of Labor, employment of public relations specialists is expected to increase 18-26 percent by 2014. Gain the edge over your classmates by getting internships or working for your school newspaper, yearbook or radio/TV station.

Skills:

Skills future employers may expect -

  • Writing – media releases, speeches, annual reports, brochures, radio commercials.
  • Strategic planning – awareness campaigns, special events
  • Public speaking – on radio and TV, to business groups, and yes, even as tour guide to V.I.P.s or students.
  • Graphics and web development – Many businesses hire only one public relations person to do everything, including brochure or ad creation, website development and newsletters. Gain a competitive edge by having the skills to be part of the “new social media” which includes blogs.
  • Language - fluency in a second language, especially Spanish. As the Hispanic population increases, so do the need to communicate with the growing number of Spanish language media.
